Kelsang Gama’s story

After searching locally and several countries abroad for a doctor who is willing to do it, finally we found one abroad. Moreover, recently, we are given an appointment to meet a local doctor. Thanks so much for our Guru’s blessings.

We have started our fundraising for the transplant. It is again out of his kindness and compassion, Sean helps to raise funds. In less than 3 weeks, we have reached almost 2/3 of the target amount.

If not because of his determination and great support, I would have given up having a wish to have a new kidney. I would say he is a real Kadampa Bodhisattva whom we all should emulate.

At times, my health condition limits the amount of meditation I can do, as well as my ability to help with tasks like cleaning the Centre and other jobs. Following my transplant, my wish is to be of greater service in any way possible to fulfil Ven. Geshe-la's wishes. For me this is not only about having a new kidney but a new life, growth and spiritual progress.

Thank you to all who have been supporting me in all kinds of way – donating, helping in setting up my website, sending my fundraising to friends and so on.

I have been struggling to prepare my mind, trying to accept the truth that I will have to continue my dialysis until my life ends. Three time every week for months and years continuously. Unknowingly, I have gone through it for 21 years. It has been lots of hurdles in my life with dialysis – tried both types of dialysis methods, experienced anaemia, high blood pressure, parathyroidisme, parathyroidisme surgery and etc. Thanks to Guru Kelsang Gyatso for all his guidance and blessings.

At first, Sean Hunt who is also with New Kadampa Tradition encouraged me to find a kidney donor. He helped me looking for a kidney donor in many ways. Not long after that, he offered a kidney to me instead. Unbelievably kind and compassionate of him…

The next step was to find a surgeon to do the transplant. Because we are not family or relative, we went through lots of difficulties looking for a doctor who is willing to perform the surgery. They are only concerned about organ trafficking. Sean is giving me his kidney only out of his great compassion. No other motive.

Sean Hunt has offered a kidney to Kelsang Gama. 40,000 British pounds sterling needs to be raised to fund Kelsang Gama's kidney transplant. This is for the travel expenses, actual surgery, pre-op assessment, and post-op recovery time. The surgery will be scheduled, hopefully for very early in 2026 through the kindness of those who wish to support this procedure.

Sean met with Gama's kidney specialist in Kuala Lumpur in November to discuss the transplant and to do extensive blood testing to confirm compatibility. Dr. Tan assured him that he has personal knowledge of/experience with elderly donors and the results have been very positive.

Kelsang Gama has been on dialysis for 21 years and the normal life expectancy on dialysis is 5 - 10 years. She definitely needs a kidney transplant to extend her life and progress in her spiritual training.

Sean Hunt, a Kadampa Buddhist practitioner for 31 years came to know Kelsang Gama over the last few years through visiting Malaysia to do personal meditation retreats in the hills near Penang, and spending a little time at Vajrapani Kadampa Buddhist Centre where Kelsang Gama lives in Penang. Kelsang Gama has been a Kadampa practitioner for 23 years and a Kadampa Buddhist nun for 18 years.

We appreciate donations if you are able to do so and, most importantly, please share this page on your social media so that many people will also have the opportunity to support Kelsang Gama's kidney transplant.
